In between then and now

In between then
and now a forest

suddenly bursts forth
from shadow, full of green

light, woodwinds and laughter
collecting kites from wayward

children, kites that the tree
spirits turn into hummingbirds

who steal the light from summer wheat –
fields, to ransom you from the lengthening day.
