Helper, Utah

After having loved
she lays her cheek
against my chest.

She says,

“Your heartbeat is
so beautiful

                  so terrifying

an unrelenting knock
on my door on a dark

                                                                    night – “

She speaks softly,

             like the breathing of
a small silent flock of birds,

                             in a blue bottle tree
                                                           full of sighs

“You are you and I
                                         am me,

                                      so beautiful

Having just loved
We lie together
spent of day,

till the crying of the north bound
freight trains just outside
the motel window
                                              rock us both
                                     gently to sleep.
