Helper, Utah

After having loved
she lays her cheek
against my chest.

She says,

“Your heartbeat is
so beautiful

                  so terrifying

an unrelenting knock
on my door on a dark

                                                                    night – “

She speaks softly,

             like the breathing of
a small silent flock of birds,

                             in a blue bottle tree
                                                           full of sighs

“You are you and I
                                         am me,

                                      so beautiful
                                                     so

                                                     terrifying.”

Having just loved
We lie together
spent of day,

talking
till the crying of the north bound
freight trains just outside
the motel window
                                              rock us both
                                     gently to sleep.
