Watching You Sleep

Then, the cool kindliness of sheets that soon smooth away trouble…~Rupert Brooke,

for Rebecca

Silence

silence

settles around

the dress left

on the floor

seeps into the sheets

making them damp

incense smoke rises.

Falling

Your lips barely moving

“What is it you say under your breath?”

fine twitches run the length

of your body

displacing certain

shadows.

Open Window

The small

proboscis

of a night

insect

penetrates

your skin;

supple

moist

yielding

the tiny

drop of

red

making

your skin

whiter

Eyes heavy

Dozing

off to

sleep

my mouth

finds

your

areola

Sleeping

Like two crescent moons

spooning

  a sleeping mudra[1]

 breath of night

through an open window

 linen drapes flutter

two prayer flags—

“What is it that you pray for?”

Open window 2

gentle

warm

rain

blue

gray

incense

smoke ascends

swirls —

Night blossoms

Dawn

In the purple

ribbon of bird

song a dragon-

fly drinks dew

from prayers

inscribed

on the temple

bell — awakened

you and I

face to face

the first smile

of the first

day of

the first day

of this reborn

                   world.
